Car Trouble

After a great labor day weekend, Eric and I were anxious to get home and take a long nap!  We weren't in a hurry to do anything productive.  Unfortunately, the universe had another plan for us. Eric had his car parked at my parent's house and as we were driving to our apartment, it became apparent that the car wasn't accelerating like it should.  We didn't even get Eric's car home before it completely broke down.  Fortunately, we pulled off into a neighborhood and broke down in front of an empty lot.

Eric's car was a 2000 Plymouth Neon - so definitely an old car.  It only had 75,000 miles on it, so we were hoping to get one more year out of it and get a new car next year.  After it broke down we did some quick diagnosis - the engine still turned on, but the car wouldn't move.  It was also leaking some sort of fluid. We figured it was the transmission.  I called one of my friends from work who was a technician and he confirmed that it most likely was the transmission.  Because the car was so old, it really wasn't worth fixing so we were in the market for a new car!

Labor Day weekend is a great time to buy a car because all the manufacturers are running their year-end sales - we pretty much had our pick of any car we wanted.  We decided we either wanted a Toyota Camry or a Honda Civic and both manufacturers had great lease deals.  We decided to look at the Civic first because we were leaning more towards that particular vehicle.  We went to Stockton Honda and they didn't disappoint.  They showed us a 2014 Civic EX and we fell in love.  It had all the features that I wanted - a touch screen display, keyless entry, backup camera, and a keyless start. It also had features I didn't even know existed that I have since have fallen in love with - for example, there is a camera on the right side mirror to help merge in traffic.  It's amazing.

Before too long we were completely sold.  We bought the car and drove it home that very night.  I LOVE our new car.

We decided that I would drive the Civic and Eric would drive the Accord that I was driving previously.  Eric woke up on Tuesday and took the Accord to the U and parked it at the institute.  Around 9:30 we received a call from the University Police telling us that our car had been hit.  Apparently, there was another car that parked behind Eric that had somehow shifted gears and drifted back into our car.  I was so shocked that I couldn't even be upset.  I mean, really!  How does this happen to us in one weekend!  We had one car break down, we bought a brand new car, and then our other car got hit in a parking lot!  Fortunately, no one was in either car so no one got hurt.

As an additional blessing, the car that hit our car had great insurance.  We filed a claim with their insurance and it was approved the same day.  We took the Accord in on Wednesday for repairs and it was done by Friday.

Eric and I commented today that even though things got crazy really fast with the cars, they also calmed down rather quickly.  We definitely hope that it stays that way - we've had enough car drama in the last week to last us for at least a few years!

  2. It’s a good thing that the person who hit your car had great insurance, and that it managed to cover the repairs for your car as well. Anyway, despite all the commotion and the car dramas, I hope you still enjoy driving the car. Drive safe!
