Our Little Southpaw

We have had our cat, CC, for three years now. It has flown by so quickly. It seems yesterday CC was still a little furball.

It all started on a Saturday in February 2012. We were bored. I had been trying to get Alison to agree to get a cat for several months. She kept telling me no.  On this particular Saturday, Alison asked me what we should do, and my response was that we could get a cat.  For the first time, she didn't have a good reason not to, so we started looking for a kitten. We looked on KSL, and animal shelter websites and found a few potential cats. We even stopped by a few of the people's houses who were advertising on KSL, but none of the kittens were what we were looking for.

Our next stop was the humane society. We really love the humane society. We didn't realize however that February is a slow time for kittens. In fact that day they only had one. It was a little two-month-old calico kitten. We immediately fell in love. She was so little and so scared and so sweet. We played with her for a few minutes before we put her back in the cage and went up to the front counter. They asked us if we had played with her for 30+ minutes and where she was (apparently you have to play with them for a while and take them up with you). We had no idea.

We went back to get her but another family was playing with her. All we could do was wait and see if they would put her back. We were so nervous. They said we could fill out the adoption paperwork while we waited, but we knew that if the other family wanted her, they would get her. We really wanted this cat. The family played with her for what seemed like forever. Then they went up to the front to see if they could negotiate the adoption fee. The humane society doesn't negotiate adoption fees for kittens. We were right there by the cage ready to pick her up when they brought her back. We played for a while and then sat out by the front counter with her while we filled out the rest of the adoption paperwork. There were a couple big dogs in the front area and she was freaking out. We couldn't wait to get out of there.

Once we had her we needed to decide on a name. Of course, it was going to be Yankees-related. We talked about Suzy for Suzyn Walden and Paulie for Paul O'Neill before settling on CC. She is named after one of our favorite southpaw pitchers, CC Sabathia. She is our little southpaw.

When we first got CC she was so small. She was a little furball. It is crazy to look back at our early pictures of her and remember how tiny she was. She had a lot of energy as a kitten. She loved to climb all over things. We would find her snuggled up in the best places. She also loved to play. We had this little cat jungle gym that was all covered in bells and whiffle balls, but within a week she tore them all off.

CC has a lot of personalities. She has always loved us but she basically hates everyone else. She does not like other animals, and whenever anyone comes over she runs and hides. She is not very friendly or cuddly (Alison has always wished she would be more cuddly). She does like to be close to us and she always sleeps on our bed.

Our little lion

She did not stay little for long. A few months after we got CC Alison started traveling for work. CC was my little shadow whenever Alison was gone. I cannot even tell you how great it was to have CC around while Alison was gone.  Whenever Alison would call, she would start meowing.  It was adorable.

Now that she is big CC has less energy. She loves to sleep the day away and she is a little bit more cuddly, but still hates being held. She does a lot of funny things and loves to distract me while I work on my homework. She oftentimes will chase pens that I'm trying to write with, or sit on a textbook I'm trying to read.  She likes to be the center of attention.  We don't mind because she puts up with a lot, especially at Halloween or when I feel like seeing if she will wear one of my hats. CC has brought us a lot of joy.
