Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party

On Friday Alison and I woke up and headed to Animal Kingdom. Kristin had recommended we try this park twice and we were glad she did. We loved Animal Kingdom and we were excited we had a little more time to explore it. My grandparents stayed at the resort. When we were planning this trip we talked to them about different options for Friday. We knew we wanted to go to the Halloween party, but we expected that they might not be interested in going. We were pleasantly surprised when they said they would come with us to the Halloween party. To make it work they decided to do a four-day ticket and relax in the morning so that they would be more prepared for a later night.

Alison and I arrived at Animal Kingdom and decided to avoid Pandora. We have learned that going on the most popular ride first often doesn't get you much of a benefit, but if you go to a different fun ride you can often walk on and/or ride it a bunch of times before any type of line develops. We were glad we took this approach because both Avatar rides ended up being down for the first hour of the morning. If we had gone that way first we would have probably been pretty frustrated.

We walked right onto Expedition Everest. This may have been our favorite ride at Disney World. The first time was the most fun because we had no idea what was coming. It was just a really fun roller coaster. We also tried Dinosaur again, still not our favorite ride. I just have a hard time getting into the theming. It is too cheesy.

We were kind of hungry so we went over to Creature Comforts to get a cupcake. We also got drinks and a breakfast sandwich to share. The cupcake ended up being a bad idea. It was mighty tasty, but the frosting was a little frozen and it fell off the cupcake and made a mess on Alison's shirt. Last time we eat chocolate cupcakes while we are wearing white shirts.

We rode Expedition Everest again and then made our way over to Pandora. We had a fast pass to Flight of Passage. It was even better the second time around. This ride is so hard to describe. It really does feel like you are flying through the stunningly beautiful world of Avatar. This ride blew me away. Loved it - kind of wanted to ride it one more time, but I didn't really want to stand in a three-hour line.

Friday was easily the warmest day of our trip. It was the only day where I was uncomfortable because it was too warm. After doing those rides there wasn't anything else we were dying to do in Animal Kingdom so we headed back to our hotel to take a quick nap before it was time to get ready for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party was a ton of fun. Alison and I had a new costume this year - we were Winnie the Pooh and Tigger. We almost stuck with our Donald and Daisy costumes from last year, but shortly before our trip, we decided to change it up. Big thanks to Debbie who helped design/create my Tigger shirt. We could not have pulled it off without her.

With the Halloween party ticket, you can get into the park three hours before the start of the party. We were out the door with my grandparents at 3:00pm planning to be at the park by 4:00pm. We arrived at the park, got our wristbands, and had just picked up a wheelchair when it started to pour rain. Luckily we were undercover so we waited out the storm for about 20 minutes. Finally, it let up enough that we headed to dinner.

Originally we didn't have dinner reservations for Friday night. As we were getting ready we thought it might be nice to have a sit-down dinner. We made reservations at the only restaurant that had a last-minute reservation available - Jungle Skipper Canteen Restaurant. It was not the best place we ate on our trip. I was the only one who liked my meal. I got fried chicken and it was good. My grandparent's both got pork and it was really tough. My grandpa let the waiter know and they took his meal off the bill.

We had a little bit of time after dinner, but before the party started. We took my grandparents over to see Mickey's Philharmagic. Since my grandpa had enjoyed Muppet Vision so much we knew he would like this one. He loved it. He told us he really liked that it seemed like he could reach out and touch the instruments.

After the show, we went started to get pictures and we did some trick-or-treating at a treat trail. We had warned my grandpa that we would be getting a lot of pictures throughout the party. He was willing to put up with the pictures if it meant he could get some candy. We were a little disappointed at the candy. There was plenty of candy, but not nearly as much as when we went to the Halloween party at Disneyland. Fortunately, they had some peanut m&m's which kept my grandpa happy.

Our first stop after the party officially started was to visit Pooh and his friends. We figured since we were dressed up as Winnie the Pooh and Tigger we should get pictures with the crew. They were all dressed in their own Halloween costumes.

Next, we headed back to the Castle to watch the Hocus Pocus stage show. We loved this show. It is narrated by the Sanderson sisters and involves a lot of favorite Disney villains. It has great music and really captures the essence of the Hocus Pocus movies.

Right after the stage show, we did a little more trick-or-treating before we headed out to Main Street to get a spot for the parade. While my grandparents held our spot Alison and I picked up a Halloween treat. We got a couple of Pumpkin Mickey Waffle sundaes. They were incredible.

The parade was pretty fun, but it had a big problem. It is Mickey's Boo to You parade. It had just started and the Pirate section was going by when they had a major malfunction with Captain Hook's ship. For some reason, it stopped working. A whole bunch of cast members came to look at it, but no one could get it working. Eventually, they moved the ship to the side of Main Street and carefully had the rest of the parade go around the ship.

As soon as the parade was over we turned around to watch the fireworks. It was the Happy HalloWishes firework show. It was a tribute to the Disney Villains and had some great Disney Halloween music. They really encouraged everyone to sing along. Great firework show - worth the price of admission.

After the fireworks, my grandpa was pretty tired. So he and my grandma left. Alison and I got in line to meet Mickey - he was dressed as Dracula. This Mickey talks - Alison was a fan, me not so much. It really caught me off guard.

Since the first parade had a little snafu we decided to watch the second one. This one went off without a hitch. Really loved the Boo to You parade. Overall the party at Disney World is better than at Disneyland. Partly because they have more room to spread out. The stage show was also awesome and they don't have anything like that at Disneyland. I also thought the fireworks and parade were more fun here. I am really happy that we got to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.
