The Perfect Beach Day

We spent the entire day on beach activities. It was wonderful. We planned to sleep in, but that never seems to work out for us, but it is okay because we aren't really tired in the mornings. We woke up and made crepes for breakfast again.

Today we drove over to Kapaa. We drove past the town a few days ago on our way to the Na Pali coast and it looked fun. Alison noticed a path by the ocean when we drove by and wanted to rent some bikes. As soon as we got into town we found a place where we rented a couple of beach cruisers. It was so much fun. We rode along the ocean enjoying the views and the ocean breeze. We rode about 5 miles to a little dirt path where we parked the bikes and walked to a very secluded beach. It was beautiful. It felt good to dip our feet in the water. I enjoyed chasing crabs across the big rocks.

those clouds are ominous

After a while, we decided to head back. As we rode back we got rained on a little bit, but the storm quickly passed. By the time we returned our bikes we were starving. We walked over to the ABC store to buy a floaty, some snorkel gear, a beach hat, and cookies and cream macadamia nuts (so yummy). We stopped by a little market in town to get some lunch. We both got laulau pork with macaroni salad, rice, and poke. It was a really delicious lunch. There were a couple of tables right in front of the market so we sat right there and enjoyed our meal.

Next, we wanted to hit the beach. Unfortunately, more storm clouds had rolled in. By the time we got over to Kapaa beach, it was looking bleak. Alison pulled out her phone and looked at the weather forecast for different beaches on the island. Poipu beach looked pretty sunny so we headed in that direction. We were chasing the sun.

Amazingly, you can drive for 20 minutes here and find completely different weather. Poipu beach was absolutely beautiful today. It was sunny and nice with no hint of rain. We set up on the beach and then blew up our new floaty. We should have bought a pump - it took me a long time and a lot of effort to get it sea-worthy. I got it there and Alison had a great time floating around the ocean for a couple of hours. While Alison was floating I went snorkeling off the beach. It is pretty rocky not too far off the Poipu beach so there were tons of fish swimming around.

I said make a funny face and then I bailed

Once we had spent some quality time on the beach we headed back to our little cottage and got all cleaned up. We walked into town, stopping on our way to enjoy the beauty of the plantation cottage area. It is such an amazing place. We walked over to Ishihara market, which has been on our list because they supposedly have the best poke on the island. It was amazing. We bought 3 different kinds of poke, some macaroni salad, and some fresh watermelon and headed down to the beach. We found a bench and had our own little picnic on the beach.

After dinner, we meandered back up the beach to our cottage. For dessert, we ate some malasadas we bought from a local bakery. Alison loved eating malasadas when she was working on Oahu. It was surprisingly hard to find some on Kauai. They were an amazing treat!
