Our European Holiday Day 1 - Arriving in Rome

We left on our European holiday on a Friday. We had a direct flight from SLC to London. It was pretty much uneventful. We mostly watched movies and tried to sleep a little bit, although sleep proved harder than usual on this trip.

London was the worst. Jet lag was setting in and we had a three-hour layover. It was honestly our least favorite part of the trip. We ate a little food and killed time while we waited for our next flight. It finally arrived and we were on our way to Rome. We both slept most of this flight, which was nice. We went to sleep and the next thing we knew we were landing in Rome.

We took a taxi from the airport to our hotel. I made dinner reservations at a restaurant near our hotel. Turns out they were totally unnecessary because the restaurant was not at all busy. We were starving and so we ordered a couple of pizzas. They were everything I hoped for in a true Italian pizza. They were wood-fired with a fresh tomato sauce and the perfect amount of Buffalo mozzarella.

After dinner, we were feeling pretty good so we decided to head into Rome. Our hotel is a little over a mile outside of the walled city. We decided to walk. Our path took us through a beautiful park area near our hotel (which reminded us a lot of Central Park). The walk felt very long, even though it was only about a mile. It probably felt so long because we were tired. Although we were tired we were glad we went into the city.

On our way we found gelato. This was very important because one of Alison’s goals for this trip is to eat gelato every day we are in Italy. It tasted divine. Gelato in Rome is totally different than anywhere else I have had it.

We found our first destination - the Spanish steps. We came at the steps from the top, which really doesn’t give you a great idea of what the big deal is about this famous landmark, especially at night. We threw a study on it and figured it out. Also, the view from the bottom is better than the view from the top. We hung out there for a while taking in the nightlife of Rome.

Our next stop was the Trevi Fountain. It was close. It is pretty incredible. It was also very crowded. We fought our way through the crowd until we found a comfortable spot. We took in the fountain for a few minutes and then decided we were too tired and it was time to call it a night. We wandered around Rome for a bit until we found a taxi stand. In Rome you normally do not hail a taxi you find one at a taxi stand. Regardless we found a taxi and made it back to our hotel. At this point, we were exhausted and fell right into bed.
