10 Years

Last week was Alison and my 10-year anniversary. We marked the occasion with a weekend getaway in Park City.

When we were in Park City in December, Alison booked us a room at the Waldorf Astoria. It was an unbelievable points redemption value. The property is great. The thing that really sets the Waldorf Astoria apart are all of the little touches. The way you walk into the lobby and there is a distinct and pleasant aroma. Or when we enter our room and the staff have left us a nice note and placed rose pedals on the bed. Or the little box of chocolates they leave on your pillow. These little details elevate the experience.

We made Saturday a Waldorf day. We spent the morning relaxing by the pool. It was a beautiful warm day. Things were still a little different because of COVID. One of the biggest differences was that they required people to make a reservation to visit the pool. They told us they were fully booked, but had tons of empty chairs so they seemed to be operating at a lower capacity. This didn't really impact us as we were able to snag a reservation.

When we got hungry we wandered back to our room and ordered food from the Protein Foundry. We wanted a light lunch and this hit the spot. We ate lunch out on our balcony. In the afternoon we got massages. The Waldorf spa is really nice and the massages were so relaxing.

When we finished with our massages we got cleaned up and drove to Main Street in Park City. We had dinner reservation at River Horse. This was one of our all-time favorite dining experiences. River Horse is located in a fairly unassuming building on main street, but has a fantastic ambiance. The night we were there they had a musician there singing and playing guitar. Our waitress was delightful. The food was delicious. We particularly loved the bread and a cheese plate we ordered. All of the food was interesting and delicious - which is a good combination. After this meal we would say River Horse is among the best restaurants in Utah.

After our meal we strolled along Main Street for a bit before heading back to our hotel and calling it a night.

We took Sunday morning slow. We ordered a light room service breakfast and had a nice relaxing morning. We soaked up the last few moments in our room until it was time to check out.

We checked out and drove to Freshie's Lobster Co. We have heard rave reviews and wanted to try it. We each got a lobster roll and shared some lobster mac and cheese. They did not disappoint. These lobster rolls are on par with lobster rolls we had in Maine. Right around the corner is the Ritual Chocolate location. This is Alison's jam. We stopped in after lunch and Alison got a chocolate bar (to save for later) and some sipping chocolate. I had a delicious brownie and some refreshing chocolate milk. After indulging in our dessert we drove over to Park City Main Street. We didn't know, but on Sunday they have a special market on main street so the place was packed. It took a while, but we eventually found a place to park and we walked up and down main street observing the shops. It was a fun, festive atmosphere. When we were done we headed home.

It was a chill, low-key, relaxing weekend. We spent a some time reflecting on the last decade and looking ahead to the adventures and opportunities still to come. We have shared a decade of immense happiness. While we were ruminating on the subject of marriage Alison told me she doesn't believe marriage is the cause of happiness, rather it has an enhancing effect upon the emotional state of the individuals within the relationship. I would certainly agree that marriage has greatly enhanced our happiness.
