Valentines is for Lovers - Hawaii Edition - Day 3

Happy Valentines Day from Hawaii!

This morning when we woke up Alison went for a run while I flew my drone around the resort. This is a beautiful resort and the weather today is ideal. It is sunny and warm with blue skies. We could not ask for a more beautiful day.

After Alison got back we made crepes for breakfast - delicious. Then we went for a walk around the resort. We are still exploring this area. We walked over to the nearby shopping center. It was about a mile from our room. This resort is full of beautiful paths. I foresee many morning walks here in the future.

After our walk, we decided to go for a drive. We drove to Holoholokai Beach Park. This is a nearby beach area with lots of volcanic rocks. I climbed all over the rocks looking at crabs, crustaceans, and other sea life in the tide pools while Alison wrote a valentines message with volcanic rock. Then we got out our beach chairs (they were gifted to us by a kind old gentleman we randomly met at the resort) and set up on the beach. Alison read while I flew my drone and kept my eyes out for whales.

I am fascinated by the steep ocean drop off

These chairs came in clutch

Alison loves to take pictures of me taking pictures

When we were hungry we drove a bit further north to Kohala Burger and Taco. They make a great burger. The place doesn’t look like much, but the food was good and the people working there were so friendly. Everyone we met in Hawaii is so friendly, when we were leaving the last beach there was a nice guy with his family who asked us if we saw the green sand, when we told him we had not seen it, he invited us to join his family and come look for it. We declined because we wanted to find food, but it was so nice.

After lunch, we drove to Lapakahi State Historical Park. Lapakahi State Historical Park is a large area of ruins from an ancient Hawaiian fishing village overlooking the ocean. In the park, there is a half-mile trail through the ancient village. It was interesting to see the old stone walls and the local was beautiful. It was worth the stop.

Then we visited the Hāmākua Macadamia Nut Company. Here we learned about how they process macadamia nuts and of course, we bought a couple cans of macadamia nuts. It was worth stopping just for the cans of macadamia nuts.

The factory where they prepare and can the macadamia nuts

These macadamia nuts actually tasted like birthday cake and butter toffee - they were really good

On our way back to our hotel we saw a food truck selling malasadas by the side of the highway. So we had to stop and buy a few. They were incredible.

Once we got back to our hotel we changed into swimwear and spent the afternoon lounging by the pool. Not a bad way to spend the day.

We had dinner reservations at Napua at Mauna Lani Beach Club. It is a nice place right off the beach. Our reservations were later in the evening so we headed to the beach and watched the end of the sunset while we waited for our table. The food was good and the ambiance was excellent. Alison had the local catch and I had seared ahi tuna. For dessert, we shared a phenomenal banana split. It was a great place to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Cheers
