12 Years

This weekend Alison and I celebrated 12 years of marriage.

As we were walking through our unfinished house on June 2, which if I am being honest I hoped we would have moved into already, Alison told me that 12 years ago she considered calling it off. Not because she didn’t love me, but because she didn’t really want to get married. I can’t blame her. We were so young and at the time it certainly felt like the only good option. There was so much we didn’t know. Ultimately, we are both grateful we made the decision to get married. We love the life we have built together and our marriage got us to where we are today.

Going into this week I have been thinking about this question: What’s a soulmate?

It’s like a best friend, but more. It’s the one person in the world that knows you better than anyone else. It’s someone who makes you a better person. Actually, they don’t make you a better person you do that yourself because they inspire you. Nothing is better than having a soulmate, lover, and best friend. I am very lucky that I found my soulmate in Alison.

We celebrated our anniversary this year with a getaway to Park City. Before we got away we took Tex on a walk around Daybreak Lake. We spend a lot of time walking around Daybreak Lake. We love it. We can’t wait until we live here again.

We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in Park City. This is the second time we have spent our anniversary at this hotel. It is a great place to celebrate an anniversary. The setting is lovely and the service is top-notch. They upgraded us to a lovely one-bedroom suite.

In the evening we headed to Park City Main Street. We did a little shopping. We spent the most time at Dolly’s Bookstore. We are suckers for beautiful books.

We had dinner reservations at Riverhorse on Main. We love this restaurant. It has a trendy urban vibe. While we were we were treated to live music. Eating at Riverhorse is an experience. The food was exceptional. we started with the pierogies, a type of dumpling, our waiter assured us it was among the more popular starters. They were quite good. Alison went with a main course of shrimp and scallops. While I had the trio of wild game - Buffalo, elk, and venison. It was all delicious. We finished our meal with a cherry peach cobbler. This was indeed an incredible meal.

While we ate, and really all throughout the weekend, we reflected on the past 12 years. They have been remarkable. We have built a life together that we love. As we reflect back on the day we were married, we don’t think either of us envisioned where we are today. That makes it difficult to predict where the next 12 years will take us, but it doesn’t stop us from trying. We have big plans and we spent a lot of this weekend dreaming about them together.
