New Year, New Goals 2020 Edition

Alison and I spent the last couple of weeks of 2019 and the first week or so of 2020 discussing the goals we hope to accomplish this year. Some are similar to last year and some are completely new. Here are a few of the things we want to focus on:

Category: Explore

Goal 1: Visit 8 countries we have never visited before.

We are planning an epic travel year. We have already booked out international trips for 2020. We plan to visit: Thailand, Cambodia, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda.

This goal is part of two larger goals - to visit the 7 modern wonders of the world and the sites displayed in Disney's Soarin' Over the World. This year we will visit the final 2 modern wonders of the world.

Locations from Disney's Soarin' Over the World:

Matterhorn in Switzerland 2018
Isfjord, Greenland
Sydney Harbour in Sydney, Australia 2019
Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany 2018
Kilimanjaro National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania 2020
The Great Wall of China in China 2018
The Great Pyramids in Egypt 2017
Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh, India 2019
West and East Mitten Buttes in Monument Valley, United States 2018
Lau Islands, Fiji
Iguazu Falls, Argentina 2020
Eiffel Tower in Paris, France 2018
A Disney Park

7 Wonders of the Modern World:

1. Chichen Itza, Mexico - Mayan City 2019
2. Christ Redeemer, Brazil - Large Statue 2020
3. The Great Wall, China 2018
4. Machu Picchu, Peru 2020
5. Petra, Jordan - Ancient City 2017
6. The Roman Colosseum, Italy 2018
7. The Taj Mahal, India 2019

Goal 2: Attend 3 Major League baseball games at new stadiums

Attending a Major League baseball game at a new stadium has become a standing goal for me. It is part of a larger goal to attend a game at all 30 baseball stadiums. Going into 2020, we have attended games at 12 of the 30 stadiums. When I began writing this post a year ago I was going to set a goal to attend 1 game at a new stadium. However, in the last week we have been working on planning a trip that will take us to 3 new major league stadiums. I decided why not go ahead and set a big goal for our baseball attendance in 2020.

Goal 3: Hike Mount Timpanogos

This goal is a repeat from last year. This was the one goal I set in 2019 that I did not accomplish. Alison and I are going to prioritize it earlier in the summer and we will make it happen.

Goal 4: Set a new half marathon PR

Last year I ran a personal best half marathon in 1:46:19. This year I want to push myself to be even better. I am giving myself two opportunities. I am going to run the SLC half marathon in April and the American Fork half marathon in June.

Goal 5: Purchase and install a chest freezer

Last year Alison wanted to buy a quarter beef. The biggest reason we didn't is because we did not have space to store it. This year we want to buy a freezer so that we can buy and store additional food. Hopefully this will help us save money, while getting better quality food.

Goal 6: Reduce single use plastics

This was a goal Alison and I both thought about while we were visiting the Great Barrier Reef. While we were out on the reef we listened to a presentation about the abundant sea life. One of the biggest threats to the reef is pollution. This year we are going to make a conscious effort to cut down on our personal use of plastic.

Goal 7: Eat Vegan during Lent from Wed, Feb 26, 2020 – Thu, Apr 9, 2020

This is a goal Alison and I first contemplated last year. We were going to eat vegan for a month, but we got busy and it didn't happen. We rescheduled for January and once again we felt too busy to attempt it. However, we have decided we are going to eat vegan for Lent this year. For about 40 days we are going to try it out. We want to see how we feel. This is going to be a great opportunity to focus on plant based eating.
