A wild, wacky weekend

This weekend was very different than we were expecting. We spent the later part of the week watching as the world reacted to the spread of COVID-19. It felt like the situation was changing every hour. It was difficult to not be distracted the the deluge of news. With the rapid pace of change came fear, anxiety, and stress. I was both shocked and happy to see baseball react by postponing the season and to see Disneyland close. These measures seem wise given the importance of flattening the curve. There is still a high level of uncertainty. Our offices closed so Alison and I will both be working from home for at least the next two weeks. We don’t really know what will happen after that.

We spent a lot of time discussing the uncertainty and running through what if scenarios. We recognize we are extremely blessed. We have a lot of stability and should be able to weather the difficulties that come at us. Even knowing that we will be okay it still feels like a very uncomfortable roller coaster ride.

We were supposed to watch Skylee and Holly this weekend while their parents took a weekend trip to Disneyland. That obviously did not happen because Disneyland closed. Skylee was so excited to spend time with us so we invited her to sleep over at our house. We sure love spending time with Skylee.

We picked her and Holly up after we finished working on Friday. Holly was only with us while her parents were braving a trip to Costco. After they picked up Holly, we made dinner. Eating with Skylee was a bit tricky because we are doing our 44 day vegan challenge. Skylee was not about to try tofu Marsala. We found other food she would eat.

CC gets along much better with Holly than she ever did with Skylee
Holly and Tex are also friends

After dinner we decided to watch a movie. We fired up Disney+ and Skylee decided we should watch Freaky Friday. She loved it. She also loved the popcorn we made using vegan butter, coconut sugar, and cinnamon. It was so good we made two batches.

When the movie was over it was time for bed. We went upstairs and read two stories from Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls 2 before bed. Then we gave Skylee an iPad and made sure she knew how to use it in case she woke up before us, before we tucked her in.

The next morning we woke up around the same time as Skylee, but she wanted to watch a movie on Disney+. While we worked on getting up/getting some breakfast Skylee watched Invisible Sister. After her show Skylee did some yoga with me while Alison worked out. Skylee and I also watched a little boxing basics video to try out some boxing moves.

Alison and I needed to take our car in for service. Skylee was mostly indifferent about this part of our day. I was able to snag a handful of snacks from the dealership which made Skylee very happy.

When we got back to our house Skylee wanted to do some experiments. We got out some pennies. Skylee used a glass of water to make a penny disappear. She also put some pennies in lemon juice and vinegar to see which solution would clean them better. We also heated up some water in a microwave and then stuck a wooden skewer in it to make the water bubble vigorously. While we were experimenting Skylee also helped Alison make nice cream - ice cream made from putting bananas in a food processor, along with a few other ingredients. Skylee was not a fan.

Next we walked over the Brookside Park (Skylee affectionately calls it the "fun park"). The weather was not great. It was windy and rainy, but she still wanted to walk to the park. She was even prepared with an umbrella. The plus side with the weather was that we were the only people on the walkways/at the park - win for social distancing. We played at the park for as long as we could until the rain chased us home.

Back at our house Skylee told us she wanted to hang out for at least 24 hours before we took her home. We broke out some games. We played mancala, exploding kittens, and blokus. Skylee is very independent and if I tried to help her she would get upset. For example, I got out in exploding kittens and it was down the last move and I tried to give her some advice. This was the wrong move and she scolded me and told me she can play herself. At the end of blokus, Alison and I both tried to help her, and she stubbornly made a different move because she did not need our help. This precipitated a little bit of a breakdown, but we were planning to get a treat anyway so we diffused the situation by offering a treat.

We found a bakery in Draper that specializes in vegan treats - City Cakes Cafe. They have all kinds of things - donuts, cakes, cinnamon rolls, and lots of cookies. We each chose a treat and took them over to Debbie's house to eat. We had to help Debbie carry some flour and sugar downstairs. We also played Battleship - Skylee loved this game.

Our 24 hours was up. We took Skylee back over to her house. We sure loved spending the whole day with her.

On Sunday morning my sister and her husband Ben brought their girls over to visit. They were in town visiting from Vernal. We caught up with them while their girls played.

Sunday evening we went over to Kristin and Dan's house. We all did home church together. We watched a message from President Nelson. I appreciated his optimism and message of hope in this time of great uncertainty. We then listened to the song Gethsemane - Skylee's request before taking the sacrament. It was really nice.

After home church we had our Marvel movie night. We have been watching all of the Marvel movies together in chronological order. This week we watched Avengers: Age of Ultron. Not our favorite Marvel movie, but still fun.

This weekend we made the best of the situation. It is a great time to focus on spending time with the people we love and slowing down for a bit. While I don't know what the future holds I believe we can choose to find happiness and joy, even when the circumstances are not ideal.
