Labor Day Weekend 2020

This year for labor day we stayed home. It seems appropriate for 2020. We thought about going a few places, but the more we looked at them the more they did not make sense. Instead, we had a relaxing weekend.

Alison traveled for work the week before labor day. Her flight coming home was delayed. She did not make it home until a little after midnight on Friday night. Flight delays are the worst, but we were glad she made it home. It would have been much worse to be stuck overnight.

We slept in on a Saturday morning. When we did get up we made broccoli crust breakfast pizza. This was our first time making this meal. It was so delicious. I was fairly skeptical going into the meal. Lots of veggies on pizza isn't usually my jam, and this pizza was made of mostly veggies. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it. We liked it so much we had it for breakfast on Sunday morning as well.

After breakfast we ran a few errands. Then we packed a lunch and drove up American Fork Canyon. Labor day weekend was really hot this year. We wanted to get away from the heat. We found a shady picnic spot and had a picnic in the canyon. It was a great way to pass the afternoon.

When we were done eating we drove the Alpine Scenic Loop. It was a beautiful day in the canyon, and not crowded. I expected the combination of covid-19 and the holiday weekend would make the canyon a popular destination, but it was surprisingly quiet. The trees were just beginning to turn to their fall colors reminding us that summer is coming to an end. We will have to come back up in October, when the fall colors are in full bloom. We talked about how this summer both, feels like an endless summer, and at the same time feels as though it passed in the blink of an eye. It was a unique summer that is for sure. As we drove we reminisced on what has occurred this year and talked about our hopes for the future. It was a pleasant drive.

We drove through Provo Canyon and headed home. It was almost 100 degrees outside. We spent the rest of the afternoon in our basement catching up on This is Us and watching Chadwick Boseman—A Tribute for a King. His death is such a tragedy. This was a fitting tribute to a man who lived his life with grace and gravitas.

When the sun was starting to set we went for a walk around our neighborhood. We love going on walks around the neighborhood. This year in particular because we have been at home more often we have really gotten out in the neighborhood and walked miles and miles. As summer comes to an end the sun begins to set earlier. Today we walked down to the lake and back while the sun was setting. Along the way we said hi to some of our neighbors, we saw lots of kids playing, and we saw a very elaborate proposal down by the lake. It was a beautiful night in Daybreak.

We took Sunday nice and slow. We woke up late, ate breakfast, and played card games. We also sat out on the rocking chairs on our porch. It was another really hot day, but in the shade of the porch it felt quite pleasant. In the afternoon we napped and watched a couple more episodes of This is Us. In the evening we went for a long walk around Daybreak. We walked over by Jake and Meg's house and then down to the lake and back to our house. It was a nice relaxing Sunday.

CC is happy when we lounge around at home. It is her jam.

On Monday morning I drove Alison to the airport. She is headed out on another work trip this week. She would have preferred not to travel on Labor Day, but this is the way it worked out this year. Alison's original flight was going to get in fairly late, but fortunately she was able to catch an earlier flight in Atlanta, so it wasn't such a brutal travel day. I mostly relaxed at home. I caught up on a few things and played with Tex. He is such a fun dog.

As soon as the frisbee hit the tree Tex knew he had no shot at getting it. He sat there and watched it until I came and shook it loose.

Tex loves to lay on the air vent, especially on a hot day after he has played frisbee.

Jake and Meg graciously hosted a family barbecue. Kristin, Dan and their girls were there, along with Blake, Debbie and Aleene. It was good to get together for a little bit this Labor Day. It was a low-key weekend, but that was just what we needed.
