Bake Sale

Last week I kicked off fundraising for Fred's Team. I am excited to run in the New York City Marathon with Fred's Team. I am also proud to be raising money for cancer research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Alison and I were brainstorming ways we could raise money. We decided to hold a bake sale. May 8th was our day because it was the date of the biannual Daybreak yard sale. Twice a year Daybreak allows residents to hold a yard sale. It is a huge event where hundreds of residents participate. There is a lot of traffic throughout Daybreak on these days as people look for great deals and unique items around the community.

Alison and I each baked a few items. I made churro cupcakes. Last year during the lockdown I tried out a few new recipes and this was by far my favorite. They were a hit - we sold out and quite a few people asked me for the recipe. Alison baked a blueberry pie, an apple pie, a chocolate cream pie, and a coconut cream pie. We then sold the pies by the slice. Alison also baked 8 small challah bread loaves - these were the first item to sale out.

We are grateful to Alison's family for all of their help. Her mom made 40 brownies. These were the staple of our sale - pretty much everyone who stopped by left with a brownie. Kristin and Dan lent us the table and chairs. They also supplied serving trays, serving utensils, and cake and cupcake stands. Our set up would have looked sad without their help. Alison's grandma and our sister-in-law Meg made some lemon bars. The bars were quite popular and sold out. We sure are lucky to have such supportive family. They played an integral part in the success of our fundraising effort.

We were also grateful for the wonderful Daybreak community. I posted about our sale on the Daybreak Facebook page and we had a wonderful response. Many of our neighbors, even ones we hadn't met before, stopped by to support us. We truly love the place we live.

Our bake sale went from 7am-1pm. We didn't have much traffic early, but from about 10am until a little after 1pm we had a steady stream of visitors. Seeing so many of friends, neighbors, and family was the best part. We enjoyed catching up with people who we haven't seen in a while and we were happy to provide them with treats. We were touched by their generous donations.

One donation really was touching. Some of our neighbor kids came over in the morning and wanted to get some treats. Alison told them they could pick out what they wanted and we were asking for a donation. Oe of the little boys left to run home and came back with 50 cents to donate. We were touched by his contribution.

The bake sale was a smashing success. We are grateful to everyone who came out to support our efforts. We truly have the best friends, neighbors, and family! Thanks to everyone's generosity the bake sale raised  $608.50 for cancer research. Alison and I personally matched every dollar that was raised today.

If you weren't able to visit our bake sale yesterday. It is not too late - you can still donate. I am personally grateful for any donation, big or small:
