Memorial Day 2021

We had an excellent Memorial Day weekend this year.

We picked up Alison's grandma on Saturday morning and drove to Ephraim. We met up with the rest of Alison's family at the Ephraim cemetery. The cemetery was special this year because Alison's great-aunt Julie came to Ephraim this year. Some of Julie's children made the trip as well. We walked the cemetery placing flowers on family graves and reminiscing.

These dogs were a little crazy with all of the people so we found them a shady spot to hang out in the car.

Skylee was excited to meet another family member her age. Although when he told her he thought they were cousins Skylee told him that they were probably second cousins because their parents were cousins. She is already working on her genealogy skills.

After the headed to camp. This year we stayed at Palisades State Park. Kristin and Dan have camped here for the past few years. Their ward has a big group that goes up over Memorial Day weekend. This year Blake and Debbie also got a spot nearby so we were all at the same place. Skylee particularly loves this camping arrangement because there are lots of kids her age to play with.

The dogs love Holly. She would often walk over with a handful of potato chips that they would happily eat.

The campground is really nice. It is right off of a lake. For her birthday this year, Alison and I bought Skylee a paddle board. I helped her get it inflated and then we supervised from the shore while she played on the lake. She is quite good on her paddle board. It was quite popular because she would give her friends rides around the lake. At one point she had 4 of her friends behind her on the paddle board. Holly loves the water. While Skylee was out on the lake. Holly waded in the lake and played in the sand.

Holly would stand in the water and sing "Baby Shark"

We spent the rest of our day at camp. That night we all helped watch the girls while Kristin took Dan to the hospital. He hurt his rib mountain biking in the morning and they decided to get it checked out. Fortunately nothing was broken, but he did have a painful contusion. We were all relieved he was okay.

The next morning we woke up and made a gigantic breakfast. We had bacon, sausage, and french toast. We made the french toast of a challah bread Alison backed on Friday night. The french toast was incredible. We are all really glad Alison loves baking these days.

We hung around camp for the rest of the morning. In the afternoon we visited the Manti Cemetery to place a few more flowers. We headed back to Ephraim cemetery to meet up with Alison's uncle Mark and some of her cousins. We visited her grandpa's grave and told a few more stories.

Then Alison and I drove Aleene home. Aleene reminisced the whole way home. We stopped at the Little Acorn Drive in on our way. We enjoy this little fast food joint.

We also stopped by the Springville Cemetery to visit my grandma Pat's grave. We also put flowers on my great-grandfather and great-grandmothers graves. This year we also brought a flower for my great-granduncle Ernest Lester Johnson. He died when we was 20 years old in World War II. I recently read his obituary and thought about the incredible sacrifice he made. On this Memorial day I am grateful for brave men and women like him who fight and die for the freedoms we enjoy.

This year marks 25 years since my grandma Pat died from battling cancer. She is dearly missed. This year I am running in the New York City Marathon to honor her life and memory. If you feel so inclined to donate to fund cancer research check out the link below:

Monday wasn't a particularly eventful day. We relaxed and prepared for the upcoming week. We did do something we haven't done since December 2019 - see a movie in a movie theater. We went and saw A Quiet Place Part II. It is a great sequel. It kept Alison and I on the edge of our seats from start to finish.
