Moving, Phase 2

This weekend we moved out of our apartment and in with Alison's parents.

The move went about as well as it could have. We began packing during the week leading up to the move. Preparation is key to having a smooth move. I also had Friday off of work for Veteran's day so I spent most of that day packing and moving. We had a few carloads of stuff we decided to place in long-term storage until our house is complete. We took those to Jake and Meg's basement on Friday. We also sold off a few more pieces of furniture. Now we are down to our bed, a couple of dressers, and our office desks and chairs. This is the second time in 3-months we have downsized our belongings. While moving isn't fun, it is a good opportunity to review what we have and question whether or not we really need/want it.

On Saturday morning we woke up and took Tex over to Blake and Debbie's house. Blake and Debbie met us at our apartment with their truck and utility trailer. We disassembled our bed and got it loaded. This was the most difficult part of the move. We took one load with our bed and mattress and a few other things to Blake and Debbie's house. Then we went met up with Kristin and Meg back at our apartment where we loaded up the rest of our stuff in less than 30 minutes. Meg aptly commented that most of our stuff at this point was clothes and gym equipment. Apparently, those are the things we cannot live without. It took another 30ish minutes to get everything unloaded into Blake and Debbie's basement. We were grateful for all of the help and glad the move went smoothly.

Once everything was unloaded Alison and I spent the rest of the day unpacking and settling in. By the evening everything was put away and our rooms were set up. Tex was already much happier. He had new roomies, Blu and Miss Kitty, and he can go run around in the backyard whenever he wants.

On Sunday we got the apartment cleaned and we turned in our keys. Just like that, we closed the book on apartment living.

The three months we spend living at Olympus at Daybreak flew by. While it never really felt like home, we settled in and enjoyed our time there. Since much of our stuff was in storage and our living space was smaller our life felt simpler. This was especially true after the hectic summer we had selling our home. After months of never-ending to-do lists, we found we had an abundance of free time.

One way Alison used the extra time was by baking fresh sourdough bread each week. We loved having fresh bread with breakfast each morning. On the weekends we would use a slice of the bread to make avocado toast. This is our favorite breakfast and will remind me a little bit of the apartment.

The one thing we will miss the most about the apartment is the location. It was right in the heart of Daybreak. This made our lives so walkable. We needed to pick up something from the store we would walk to Harmons. We needed to print something we would walk to the library. We wanted to go downtown we could walk to Trax. Everything was so close. We were also close to our new home. We would walk by once or twice a day. There wasn't as much progress these past 3-months as we had hoped, but it was fun to see the progress when it occurred. Living in this part of Daybreak made us even more excited for our new home - once we move in we will once again have a very walkable life.

We closed the page of this chapter of our life and moved on to the next chapter. It will probably be ~10 months until our house is finished. We are grateful to Blake and Debbie for opening up their home and allowing us to live with them while we wait.
