Another Excellent Birthday

This year for my birthday we took a little weekend getaway to Salt Lake City. We had Debbie give us a ride to the Trax station after a family party on Saturday. We took the train downtown. We were staying at the Hotel Monaco. It is a little boutique hotel right in the heart of SLC. It was a great place to stay.

On Sunday (my birthday) we slept in. When we woke up we went to Market Street for brunch. Market Street has an underrated brunch. It is very classic. Alison had an omelet and I got crab eggs benedict. Every brunch selection comes with an excellent cinnamon roll. It is soft and fluffy with just the right amount of sweetness. Most of this weekend was about relaxing and eating delicious food.

After brunch, we took Trax to Fashion Place so I could go to the Apple Store. My phone died on Sunday morning. It wouldn't charge. We wanted to see if they could help me figure out what was wrong with it. They were extremely busy so we hung out at the mall for a while waiting to see where we would get to on the waitlist. Eventually, we gave up and headed back downtown. Not having a phone was a blessing and a curse. It was nice to be completely disconnected, but it also had its challenges since there were many things (like buying Trax tickets) that we usually do on my phone that we had to do on Alison's phone. It was also ironic that on the day I probably get more messages than on any other day of the year I didn't have any access. Oh well.

We took Trax to Trolley Square. Our house was on our minds. Especially now that our home is framed and we have really been envisioning the furnishings we want to have in our home. There is a table Alison found online at Pottery Barn that she really liked. We stopped by Pottery Barn to see if we liked it as much in person as we did online. We did love it.

We walked back to our hotel. It was almost a mile walk and while the day was cold, the sun made it feel comfortable.

We got all cleaned up and headed across the street to the Capitol Theater to see the Nutcracker. I didn't realize that this Nutcracker is the longest running version of the ballet performed in the US. It is a topnotch performance. I would say it was on par with the version we saw in New York. They each incorporate different elements and both are excellent performances.

After the show we had a birthday dinner at The Capital Grille. This location opened in SLC in 2022. We loved it. It is an upscale establishment and they had excellent service. The handwritten birthday note and some decorations on the table were a really nice touch. We took our time and shared a nice slow meal together.

All in all it was an excellent birthday.
